Rowing WA Regional Coach and Athlete Mentoring Program

Published Mon 29 May 2017

Rowing WA have been promoting rowing in the regions by taking  "Olympians to the country!" Rhys Grant, Hannah Vermeersch and Tony Lovrich with Jen Matthies have been visiting the regional rowing clubs and the local schools to promote the sport.

Rhys, Tony, and Jen have been getting out on the water in Bunbury and Margaret River with the local rowing clubs coaching the athlete's and coaching the coaches. Rowing WA with the support from Scotch College and Curtin University Boat Club were able to deliver two quads and oars to Margaret River Rowing Club. We have been able to visit three different schools in Bunbury and Margaret River. Rhys has been sharing his Olympic experience with a video of his racing. Our visits have also involved the students racing Rhys over 100 m on the ergo and practicing their sculling technique on their school ovals. All students have been very excited about meeting two Olympian's and hearing about their experiences.

Tony, Hannah and Jen visited Albany Rowing Club and Great Southern Grammar to provide coaching and engagement support. Great Southern Grammar kids had a great time racing Hannah on the ergo's over 100m and learning from a fellow regional student about how they two could go all the way to the Olympics with a bit of hard work.

Rowing WA will be providing all the regional clubs and schools with follow up visits later this year.

A big thanks must go to Rhys Grant, Hannah Vermeersch and Tony Lovrich for their time and support for this program. Thank you to the Department of Sport and Recreation, WA for their support and investment in enabling Rowing WA to deliver this program.
