Making Waves "Changing Lives"

At the core of the Making Waves program is the fundamental belief that sport can be used to influence and change lives for the better.  The program is all about giving young people the confidence and self-belief that no matter who you are or where you come from that you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

Insight Into Day 1 to Day 3

The School Holiday Rowing Camp commenced early Monday morning with several students from Southern Hills Christian College, Kelmscott SHS, Lumen Christi College, Salvado Catholic College & Harrisdale SHS arriving at Champion Lakes Regatta Centre ready to take on rowing for the next 5 days.

Activity over the first 3 days has been focused around time on the ergo's, on-water sessions in the Edons (training single scull) & then progressing into singles, quads & an eight.  All the students have been extremely enthusiastic (& at times very entertaining) in their participation.  It has been heart-warming watching the growth over the last 3 days of the kids - as some had arrived at camp on Monday never having rowed before - to confidently taking out a single or engaging in crew activity in a quad or eight.

Making Waves Board Member, Miriam Borthwick, visited us on Wednesday afternoon & was delighted in the level of engagement from the kids & the enjoyment they were getting out of the sport.  She had this to say from her visit...

...what a wonderful sight it was yesterday seeing the group of such happy kids at the rowing camp, and seeing so many confidently scooting across the water in their singles, fearless and fast.

Each one I chatted to was very happy to be attending and the older sister teaching the younger one was gorgeous to see. Their parents were thrilled to arrive just as they were heading off in a double together. If only club rowing at Champion Lakes was buzzing with activity for them.

Well done on running a great camp. I am sure it will be talked about and remembered by everyone attending.

Feedback from the parents after each day has been very positive with some asking if siblings could be brought down to the lake to also join in as the word had obviously spread at home!  Our coaches & staff are loving the engagement from the kids & are enjoying getting to know them on their level.

There are 2 days left of camp which will culminate on Friday afternoon with the Parents "Learn 2 Row" session - where the kids become the coaches!  The aim is to end the session with a race between parents & kids.

Day 4: Thursday, 22.12.2022

Today started off with the kids on the water in singles & quads before the heat of midday set in.  Rowing WA President, David Rose, popped in for a visit during the course of the morning & immediately put himself in a tinnie in order to get a birdseye view of our rowers on the water!  He was impressed with the level of skill in the singles, before having the opportunity to witness crews racing in the quads.  David took a few photos which can be accessed in the photo album for day 4 via the link below.
