Two WA Coaches Selected for International Coach Development Opportunity in Hong Kong

Rowing WA is pleased to announce that two Western Australian coaches have been selected to take part in the International Coach Development Opportunity with the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) in 2026, following an exceptionally strong response to the program.

Initially launched as an opportunity for one coach, Rowing WA has been able to expand the program to support two successful applicants, further strengthening our commitment to coach development and international engagement.

With support from the Department of Creative Industries Tourism and Sport (CITS), the international coach development opportunity forms part of Rowing WA’s strategic intent to build and deepen relationships across Asia, while providing emerging coaches with valuable exposure tohigh‑performance international training environments. The placement will enable WA coaches to observe and support the Hong Kong China national rowing program as it prepares for upcoming international regattas.

Successful Coaches

Following a competitive application process, the following coaches have been selected:

Nicholas Tejchman
Travel dates: Sunday 3 May – Monday 11 May 2026

Javier Rhonda
Travel dates: Wednesday 8 April – Thursday 16 April 2026

Both coaches will undertake an intensive placement at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, working closely with the HKSI Head Rowing Coach and coaching staff. During their time in Hong Kong, the coaches will gain firsthand experience within an international high‑performance environment, while also contributing to the continued development of the relationship between Rowing WA and HKSI.

Expanding the Opportunity

Rowing WA General Manager – Operations, Stacey Francis‑Bayman, said the ability to extend the opportunity to two coaches was a fantastic outcome for the WA coaching community.

“The quality of applications we received was extremely high, which made the selection process very challenging. We are delighted to be able to supporttwo coaches through this opportunity, rather than one, and to continue investing in the development of our coaching workforce.”

“These international experiences are invaluable—not only for the individual coaches involved, but for the broader rowing community in Western Australia, as learnings and insights are brought back and shared locally.”

Building International Pathways

The placement supports Rowing WA’s broader focus on creating international pathways for coaches, athletes and officials, while positioning Western Australia as a valued partner within the global rowing community. It also complements ongoing work to explore future reciprocal training and tour exchange opportunities with Asian rowing nations.

Rowing WA congratulates Nicholas Tejchman and Javier Rhonda on their selection and looks forward to following their experiences in Hong Kong in 2026.
