Vale Chris Hayes (14.07.1948 - 01.06.2026)
Published Wed 17 Jun 2026
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a beloved captain, coache, mentor and friend. Always with a ready smile, keen eye and helping hand, Chris was an invested and enthusiastic member of the ANA team.
Intrigued by his daughter Alex’s rowing journey, Chris found himself in a boat very quickly—and even more swiftly in a tinny. He went on to successfully coach a range of crews, from novice to state level, as well as interstate and international crews we ambitiously pursued, including favourites such as the Head of the Yarra. Chris was well known among Australian and WA coaches for his enquiring mind and engaging nature, always seizing opportunities to extend his coaching skills by learning from others. His delight in discovering new drills, skills and rigging techniques was infectious.
The rowing community has shared many joyful and triumphant memories with Chris, and he will be deeply missed.
ANA is planning a row-past at ANA Rowing Club following the Guildford to Garrat medal ceremony on Sunday 21 June, with 8+ crews.
