UWA Boat Club History Book

To mark their centenary in 2019, UWA Boat Club commissioned Professor Jim Wieland to write the Club's history.

Jim Wieland, well known to many in WA as a champion athlete in the 1950’s, is an accomplished writer, a former professor of English at the University of Wollongong and Executive Dean at Curtin University and the author of published histories of the UWA Athletics Club and Football Club. Former UWABC President Adam Feilding edited the book.

From the foreword by David Bean, member of the Board, and Life Member, UWABC:

Come forward, Uni! was commissioned by the Board of the University of Western Australia Boat Club as a part of the Club’s plans for its centenary 1919-2019 to preserve its history for the future. However, it is much more than a comprehensive record. Members of the Club, past and present, will recognise experiences and stories which are important to them.

The stories told here are vivid and absorbing to the reader, and are supported by over 900 images.  They tell of rowing competition, of memorable coaches, coxswains and crewmates, of intervarsity regattas, of spirited relations with University officialdom and with the Guild of Undergraduates and Sports Council. The stories are about the boat shed itself, which is a much-loved landmark on Matilda Bay, and about particular boats, which often seemed to have characters of their own.

Perhaps above all, memories of friendships formed as part of the student experience at UWABC will be most powerfully evoked.

Bound in full colour print, Club members, past and present, recount their experiences and stories in 900 vivid images.

The UWA Boat Club is hosting their book launch on Sunday, 12th February.
