Rose Regatta – Final Preparations

The Rose Regatta squad depart for Shanghai, China, on May 10, to start Rowing WA’s next international rowing adventure. The crew are looking forward to participating in the regatta, organised by the Fengxian District Sports Bureau and hosted by the Chinese Rowing Association. 

This opportunity is supported by the Western Australian Government through an Asian Engagement Grant with the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport.

The Rowing WA squad will act as ambassadors for our sport and for WA.  There is a diverse representation across WA clubs of the athletes who will compete. They will be coached by Caine Bristow (WARC).

Since taking up the invitation, our team has been trialing a few quad arrangements and double combinations on Perth water. The quad races the 1000m course on Saturday 16 May and the doubles face off on the 500m course on Sunday 17 May.  

Our team has the opportunity to train on the regatta course each day, with official ambassadorial events scattered throughout the week. There will also be time to explore the city of Shanghai. 

This experience is key to Rowing WA’s Asian Engagement strategy, as the connections and networks built by the squad support in developing cross-cultural relationships. From these relationships we can promote Western Australia as an international rowing destination to encourage inbound trips. In parallel, we are able to build knowledge and experiences gained to develop international rowing tours as part of the outbound goal.
