Meet Our Boat Race Officials!

Rowing WA would like to introduce you to Boat Race Official, Lynette Sleight.

Over the last few months, Rowing WA has featured several of our Boat Race Officials & introduced them to the WA rowing community. This fortnight, we would like to introduce you to a BRO who considers officiating a wonderful way to meet a diverse community.

BRO Questions and Fun Facts

Why did you get involved with Officiating?

  • Because rowing involves many people in many roles, I think to be the best you can, attempt as many of those roles as possible to repay for all the cherished feelings of being in the sport: on the water, in the box, at the start, among the cheering, loading, unloading, maintaining: amongst many others who are collecting rowing memories 

Do you have any long-term goals in Officiating?

  • Keep my sense of humour. 

What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen out on the water?

  • Lynne Bayliss told me, up a spit post at my first Canning Bridge regatta, not to drop the loud hailer as Brett would have our guts for garters. 20 minutes later, Lynne dropped the loud hailer!

What’s your favourite food at a regatta?

  • Toasted cheese and tomato white bread sandwiches 

What Superpower do you wish you had?

  • To give access to the amazing feeling of being there for everyone.

A secret Talent?

  • Changing my mind

Your favourite book?

  • At present "Bill Dempsey, The boy from Birdum"

Your first car?

  • Red Triumph Herald

Your hometown?

Your most prized possession?

  • A painting of me my daughter created when she was four years old.

Why would you encourage others to get involved in Officiating?

  • A wonderful way to meet a diverse community that works for safety, access and fairness

Rowing WA Boat Race Officials are paid for regattas, ranging from $50 for a short head race up to $150 for IGSSA/PSA regattas. You can choose which regattas you would like to help at.

You will be fully trained & learn on the job as well.
