Making Waves Program Empowers Armadale Students through Rowing, Celebrates Milestone at All-Schools Regatta #1

Making Waves (MW), a transformative initiative established in 2018, has been making waves of its own in the local community by changing lives through rowing. Targeting secondary students in the Armadale area, MW has formed strong partnerships with local schools to provide a unique opportunity for approximately 900 students per year.

With a core focus on building life skills through engagement with rowing, Making Waves has empowered students to develop valuable personal and academic competencies. The program's impact has been far-reaching, equipping students with teamwork, discipline, and resilience, while fostering a passion for the sport.

In an exciting development, 2023 marks a major milestone for the program as the first cohort of rowers and crews from Making Waves graduates into competitive rowing. The culmination of their hard work was showcased at the highly anticipated All-Schools #1 event at Champion Lakes Regatta Centre on Sunday, 28th May.

Making Waves has been working diligently alongside local schools near Champion Lakes, serving as a strong advocate for rowing and actively demonstrating its numerous benefits. By showcasing how rowing can positively contribute to personal growth and academic development, the program has fostered a greater appreciation for the sport within the community.

One key element behind the program's success has been the unwavering support from Wesfarmers, a prominent local organization. Since 2016, Wesfarmers has been a vital sponsor, providing instrumental assistance that has allowed Making Waves to reach its objectives and transform the lives of countless students in the region. The six-year sponsorship commitment from Wesfarmers has been crucial in ensuring the longevity and sustainability of the program.

As the first rowers and crews from Making Waves took to the water this weekend, the event not only signified their personal achievements but also stood as a testament to the power of community partnerships and the importance of investing in youth development.

With Making Waves at the forefront, the program continues to embrace the transformative potential of rowing, creating opportunities for local students to thrive both on and off the water. Making Waves' ongoing commitment to changing lives through rowing serves as an inspiration to communities worldwide, highlighting the profound impact that sports and community engagement can have on young individuals.

Making Waves Wrap-up of the All Schools #1 Regatta - Sunday, 28th May 2023

Congratulations to our Making Waves athletes for breaking ground at All Schools 1 on Sunday! This marked the first occasion that Making Waves have competed in a Rowing WA event!

It was a great day for rowing, with the sun shining and beautiful flat water! The kids put out a competitive effort, coming away with great results!

Of the four athletes entered this weekend, all were brave enough to take on the single. Ollie in Year 9 came 2nd, Coby in Year 10 came 5th, Temperance in Year 9 came 3rd, and Aylaa also in Year 9 came 4th. Our athletes have spent a lot of time in the singles since day one of learning to row, and we are so proud of them for executing their first race!

Our athletes were able to join forces in doubles, with the boys double coming 4th in their division, and the girls coming 3rd.

To round off the day, Temperance and Aylaa rowed in a quad with 2 girls from ANA, and came away with a gold medal!

Being involved in the sport of rowing teaches more that just rowing skills, and our kids embraced the challenges and emotions that come with racing in such a mature manner. They’ve ripped off the band-aid with this first regatta, and we look forward to seeing them progress in their future competitions!

Huge thank you to Coach Alec, and Luke for supporting the kids on the day, and parents/guardians for coming on this journey with them!
