Rowing WA Honours Athletes Selected by RA for the 2023 Australian Rowing Teams!

Last week Rowing Australia announced the squad line up for several national teams to represent Australia internationally in 2023.  WA athletes have been honoured with places in all squads this year, some returning champion athletes and others young, rising athletes.

Australia will suit up seven Olympic champions as part of a 66-strong Australian Rowing Team (ART) ready to take on the sport’s elite during the international rowing season, which culminates in the 2023 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade in September.

The ART was selected after a gruelling series of trials in blistering heat at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith as the Paris Olympics countdown dipped below 500 days, with just over 500 until the Paralympic Games in 2024.

Jess Morrison OAM and fellow Tokyo champion Annabelle McIntyre OAM will combine in the Women’s Pair, the same boat in which they won the B Final in Tokyo.  McIntyre believes they can take major strides as they aim to become a genuine medal threat again in Paris.

“It is really exciting to be back in this combination. We have gone fast in the past and feel that we have more to give in this boat class. We want to build on what we produced last cycle and see where that will take us through this year and into Paris,”

The ART will take to the water at the Australian Rowing Championships in Perth before beginning the overseas swing through Italy, Switzerland and finally Serbia.

The next generation of Australian rowing stars have been named to take to the water for the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from July 19-23.

A team of 20 athletes and six coaches were confirmed after intensive trialling at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, where the under 23 athletes shared the water with senior stars competing for their own spots on the national team.

Rowing Australia Deputy Performance Director Jaime Fernandez OLY said the selection trials were the culmination of a finely tuned pathway system that began at grassroots level.

“We see the talent on show at the trials but are aways thankful of our key partners in supporting this regatta and helping us build a strong team. That includes clubs, parents, friends, member associations and our state institutes and academies.”

The U23 team will race at the Australian Rowing Championships in Perth from March 27 before returning for a crucial training block prior to travelling to Europe for the World Rowing U23 Championships.
